A man passed for female and was detained in a women’s prison in a twisted tale of gender and identity.
According to reports, a woman was arrested last week in Eldoret after her name was not found on the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital interns’ register. Capital News reports, the suspect who at the time went by the name Pamela Mulupi, had been arraigned for impersonating a nurse and remanded at the Eldoret Women Prison, later turned out to be a man. The 29-year-old suspect, according to police, was arrested over the weekend at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The circumstances that led to ‘her’ arrest were due to her questionable behavior. However, her mannerisms were the only factor that made her stick out like a sore thumb. Standard Digital reported that the suspect who is now known as Hillary Kiprotich aka Chepkosgei, “was dressed in the nurse’s uniform complete with a badge and was working at the Emergency Section when other nurses grew suspicious.”
29-year-old Chepkosgei told the court in proceedings held yesterday (18.06.2019) that he is indeed a man but said he associates more with the female gender.
Moreover, the birth certificate, passport, and national identification card, which were produced in court, classified Chepkosgei as a female.
Although Chepkosgei was ordered to stay in remand for ten days while investigations continue, more information about him has been made public. The nurse impersonator also previously participated in marathons in various countries including Malaysia, Morocco, and Tanzania as a female athlete. Hillary has won 3 medals as an athlete, even participating in marathons in Zambia.
As investigations into Hillary Chepkosgei’s matter continue, the case hearing has been set for 27th June 2019.
