Will Smith aka Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff first worked together in the late 1980s. The duo has since earned 2 Grammys and 3 American Music Awards for their captivating raps and beats. But now, they are back to give their fans some more.
And now, the West-Philadephia grown and bred duo of Will Smith and Jeffrey Townes are back to re-introduce themselves to a new audience. The two who earned their first Grammy for the track ‘Parent’s Just Don’t Understand’ in 1989 from their first studio album ‘He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper’ are keen to show and prove what real hip hop sounds like. Thriving during the renaissance of Hip Hop in American in the late 1980s, the duo has gained a reputation not only for their coordination but their raw talent. Fresh Prince delivers the bars that fuse humor and real-life scenarios while DJ Jazzy Jeff keeps it funky with some entertaining beats that guide the track’s flow.
In a day and age when mumble rap and trap have taken over, the true artistry of Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff has continued to improve throughout the years. Based on a recent upload on YouTube, Will and Jeff are set to give their fans some good music. The video featured behind the scenes clips of a recent rehearsal ahead of their tour.
The two also reminisce on their careers, and Smith points out, “It’s 30-something years since we did a show…its a long time.” The twosome was practicing for a show back where it all started in Philadelphia. Jazzy Jeff commented on their choice to go back home saying, ” Just bring it back to where it started…this isn’t my mum’s basement or your mum’s basement, this is different…I think it is important for the rehearsal and for the show, especially for the old-school part.”
Based on the rehearsal, the duo actually performed the track ‘Da South’ better than their official release which came out in 1993, more than 20 years ago.
Reacting to the rehersal video, one commented “even as a practice session that was still better than 95% of the rappers from this new era of hip hop.” and another noted, “Epic… if you’ve never listened to their album “He’s the DJ. I’m the Rapper”… please do. One of the most underrated albums ever. Came out in the late ’80s, still rocks to this day.”
The duo worked and performed together from 1985 to 1994. The ‘Pump Up The Bass’ duo both appeared in the hit 90s show ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.’ The show which began in 1990 saw Will Smith as the lead character moving from West Philadelphia to Bel Air, California. Many speculate that the success and fame that came with their music and the show led to the break-up of the group.
