‘Old Mutual Amazing Voices’ has crowned Kenya’s Wanavokali winners of its first season.
The pan-African talent search show took contestants from Kenya, South Africa, Ghana and Zimbabwe; auditioning talent from 9 cities within these countries as earlier reported by The Sauce.
In Kenya, the auditions were held on the 8th of October 2019 with Sanaipei Tande and Kavutha Mwanzia Asiyo as the judges. Kenya had three teams shortlisted but only two managed to travel Wanavokali and Solid Rock band. Sadly, Duaro Harmonies did not manage to travel due to visa complications.
The 13 week show that was filmed in South Africa saw Kenyan group Wanavokali beat out opponents to take home prize money winnings of Ksh10M as a group.
Wanavokali are a Kenyan acapella group who caught the world’s attention with their rendition of Nyashinski’s hit single, ‘Malaika’. The group of 6 vocalists met at Safaricom Twaweza Live as background vocalists and went on to audition in October 2019 in a bid to win the top prize. The 6 vocalists are Ythera, Riki Msanii, Chepkorir, Lena Gayah, Rui and Mellah are overjoyed at their achievement, flying the Kenyan flag high on the continent.
Since appearing on the Amazing Voices talent searches, the group has teamed up with Collo G, for the uplifting release ‘Unioshe’ as reported on Mdundo. The track has a little over 100K views, but is definitely worth a listen.
