A prankster has single-handedly proved just how nosy Kenyans truly are.
According to a recent upload on Twitter, Francis D Frank pranked a busload of unsuspecting commuters. In a video, a man is heard picking a phone call, speaking to a friend. In the animated conversation, he mentions how commuters are being fined by local police over flaunting safety laws, because of not wearing their seatbelts. He goes on to mention that the police are only minutes away, fining each commuter 1,000Ksh. As he utters the words, it seems the otherwise ‘preoccupied’ bus-load of Kenyans shift in their seats to wear their seatbelts, to avoid having to pay the 1,000Ksh fine.

According to a report by the Institute for Transport and Development policy, the ubiquitous matatu minibusses are the transportation mode of choice for roughly 29% of Nairobi’s commuters. Carrying 8-14 people each, the matatu minibusses offer greater coverage and accessibility than the city’s few larger buses.
The National Transport and Safety Authority maintain law and order on the roads as it relates to transport providers on Kenya’s roads. Capital News reported the newly revised penalties for flaunting road safety and rules. According to NTSA Traffic Rule 22A(1) and (2), for a PSV car without a seat belt installed, the owner of the vehicle suffers the consequences of paying Sh1,000 for each seat without a safety belt. As a passenger, you must comply with the NTSA Traffic Law by wearing the safety belt at all times when in a journey, failure to do so, will attract a fine of Sh500.
