Video: Protest at Kabete Campus

Students at the University of Nairobi’s Lower Kabete Campus on Tuesday morning blocked the Wangige-Nairobi road to protest the death of a colleague who was run over by a motorist at Gachie market on Monday night.

The fourth year student died while he was being taken to hospital.

The students through their campus representative Vincent Onwong’a demanded that speed bumps be erected on the road to impede speeding motorists on the road.

“We lost a student to a speeding motorist and it is very unfortunate that on a stretch of around 6kms we only have one bump. The government should take immediate action and erect bumps so that we deal with the issue of speeding motorists,” he said.

The students moved from the campus to Gachie market and blocked the road using old electricity poles, boulders before lighting small fires.

Motorists kept off the route for fear of being attacked by the enraged students.

Kikuyu police boss Joshua Arende told Capital FM News that the motorist was arrested after he reported the case and police had commenced investigations.

While he condemned the demonstrations, Arende said that action on the motorist will be determined by the outcome of the investigations.

Kikuyu police boss Joshua Arende told Capital FM News that the motorist was arrested after he reported the case and police had commenced investigations.

“The student died while being taken to hospital; the scene was visited and the motorist was arrested. The matter is under professional investigation. These kinds of demonstrations are not welcome because other motorists have been denied their rights,” he said.

Last Week, University of Nairobi students from the main campus paralysed business in city streets as they stoned motorists and robbed them in protest at the lecturers’ strike.

The students, carrying twigs and placards, marched through Uhuru Highway to Nyayo House where they harassed motorists and pedestrians before they went back to the University Way roundabout which they made the epicentre of their demonstration.

Police violently dispersed them by shooting in the air and lobbed tear gas at them.
