Pageant winners Mr & Miss USIU share their plans for 2019

The United States International University-Africa held the Mr. and Miss. USIU-Africa beauty pageant on November 22, 2018, at Garden City Mall. The finals saw a total of fourteen participants compete for the crown. Mr. Tonny Bach and Ms. Janade Noni were crowned Mr. and Miss. USIU-Africa respectively.

The winners were chosen from a competitive field on fourteen participants from diverse backgrounds. This year, the annual pageant was organized to raise funds that will be channeled to Altawoon Primary School in Korogocho slums, Nairobi, for building additional classrooms.

CC: What projects do you hope to initiate within your tenure?
JN: We plan to help students and members of the community further their talents and generate opportunities for them. We would also like to generate enough funds to allow the charity to be self-sufficient. Finally, we plan to push and motivate each title holder to make as great of an impact as they can make.

CC:Why was it so important for you to win the crown of Mr & Miss USIU?
JN: I’ll be honest and say it was not really important for me to win but it has always been important for me to be a good person and a person who helps others. Which is what I believe the trait of Miss USIU-Africa should have.

TB: On an individual level, I would say it was important for me to win the crown because as I grew up I have longed for a sense of self-actualization, as well as a healthy sense of belonging amongst peers. But more importantly, I have always had an urge, to help others where I could, lingering within me. Having this title, I believe, will hopefully allow me to do great things for people.

CC: What new areas in student community life do you hope to improve within your year as Mr & Miss USIU?
JN: I would not like to assume much about student community life on an individual basis until I actually get to interact with my fellow students and talk about improvements that will make the student body proud.

CC: Many universities have beauty pageants, how was the road to being crowned Mr & Miss USIU?
JN: Running for Mr and Miss USIU-Africa is a very challenging process. Many people have misconceptions about beauty pageants and do not realize how hard you have to work on yourself mentally and physically. All in all, it was the best decision I made this year and I think everyone should try it.

CC: What personal weaknesses do you think you will have to overcome to do well in your new appointment?
JN: My weakness is the fact that I usually feel the need to make everyone happy. It’s a trait that has made me settle for less in life but I am aware of this and I believe I’m growing from it.

TB: In some instances, I find myself being too supportive. It may sound like it isn’t a weakness, but I believe that trying to fulfill everyone’s wishes may cause delays in attaining the greater good.

CC: What strengths do you bring to the crown?
JN: One thing about me is that I am very passionate about things I do and I am naturally a helper. I feel these two traits about me will help me work well with others and get things done.

TB: I am very imaginative, which in some cases allows me to find creative solutions.

CC:Any obstacles you foresee within the institutions? How do you hope to overcome them?
JN: One challenge we feel we might face is the reality of not having everyone agree on changes or ideas that we may want to make. This is something normal when dealing with a large group of people but we are positive that we will make a difference that the majority of the school will be proud of.
