UoN female students now working with Shebesh to help the elderly

Nairobi Women representative Rachel Shebesh kicked up a storm in the run-up to the elections last year when it was reported saying that UoN female students work as Koinange street prostitutes. The student leadership demanded an apology from the then contestant. It now seems that is history as the two parties have buried the hatchet.
Women Students’ Welfare Association (WOSWA), a body that brings together female students of the University of Nairobi, is working with Shebesh to feed the elderly and vulnerable in Nairobi’s informal settlements.
“We recently partnered with a feeding program that the office of Nairobi Women Rep Rachael Shebesh carries out every Tuesday targeting old people living with HIV in the innermost villages in Nairobi County,” said Purity Wangoi (Kui), WOSWA Chair.
According to Kui, about 10 ladies volunteer every Tuesday and team up with the rest of the group as they visit the less fortunate in Kawangware, Ngando, City carton, Kamae, Marurui, Korogocho, Njathaini, Deep Sea, Karura, among others.
“When I learnt of this program I did not hesitate to ask for partnership with Shebesh, which she graciously accepted. For the past five months, we have been volunteering our time as well as get clothes and stuff like blankets and toiletries donated by the comrades and take them to the elderly,” adds Kui.
Kui notes that through such programs, students are engaged and avoid idleness as well as helping the less privileged in the society.
