UoN 3rd Year student wins Chinese Bridge Competition

University of Nairobi junior, Ruth Kimani put her language skills to the test. Competing against 15 other students, Ruth emerged top dog at the Chinese Bridge Competition held at the University Of Nairobi.

The comrade stated that her inspiration to learn the language emerged after her father worked with Chinese and had difficulty communicating in the work place. She explained, “My Father could not speak Chinese with his colleagues despite working with them and the Chinese could not speak English.”

After her win, she expressed her excitement and pointed out that she is eager to bring home the win from the global competition to be held in China later in 2016. According to an article published in the University of Nairobi site, the competition was organized by University of Nairobi’s Confucius Institute, Chinese Embassy in Kenya and sponsored by China Road and Bridge Corporation Kenya as well as China Telecom Global Limited. The event had high-level officials in attendance including Chinese consular representative Mr. Yao Ming who was impressed by the skills exhibited by the students.

Ruth Kimani was not the only competitor recognized, as the runners’ up received prizes for their efforts. The second prize was shared between two contestants- Emily Ngigi and Grace Muchiri also from the University of Nairobi. The third prize was shared by Hazary Mwaporojo and Brenda Muthoni from Egerton University as well as Mercy Kathina from the University of Nairobi.
