Tyler Perry’s onscreen alter ego “Madea” may soon retire.
Award-winning moviemaker Tyler Perry shared that he may soon pull the plug on the character much to the dismay of fans. Perry revealed that he plans to stage a farewell tour of the film “Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral” next year to bring an end the character’s long run onstage and onscreen.
In movies, Perry takes on the character of ‘Madea’ by donning a wig, makeup and dressing to portray the tough-talking elderly black woman. The character of Mabel Earlene “Madea” Simmons first appeared on stage almost 20 years ago and now has 9 films under her belt. From ‘The Diary of a Mad Black Woman’, to ‘Madea Goes To Jail’ the character has appeared on stageplays as well as big budget movies. Grossing hundreds of millions of dollars, the Madea franchise has received some criticism that the character only furthers the stereotypical black women portrayed in media.
The latest installment of the movies “Family Funeral” was allegedly shot two years ago but Perry wanted to stagger it along with his other films, including the Madea Halloween movies, 2018 drama “Acrimony” featuring Empire star Taraji P Henson. Perry is also set to release ‘Nobody’s Fool’ that features comedienne Tiffany Haddish set to premier 2nd November 2018.
The 10th movie ‘A Madea Family Funeral’ which is set to be Madea’s last will premiere in 2019.
