Two thieves have been held by the police after the funeral of the late Tanzanian media mogul Reginald Mengi was sadly turned to an opportunity to rob mourners of their valuables.
Police in Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania are holding two people accused of stealing various properties belonging to mourners, who attended the funeral ceremony of IPP Group of Companies executive chairman Reginald Mengi, who passed away recently.
In the incident that occurred at Machame Nkuu, Mr Mengi’s home village, where he was buried on Thursday (09.05.19), the thieves made away with gold necklaces, laptops and an unspecified amount of money.
Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander Hamis Iassah confirmed to a popular Tanzanian tabloid, The Citizen yesterday (12.05.19) that a man and a woman were arrested in connection with the incident and were being interrogated.
RPC Issah said the theft was committed by the people who are alleged to be members of Mengi’s family who came from Dar es Salaam.
“It is true, some valuables from Mengi’s house were stolen. The thieves are not known yet. We are investigating. It could be anyone both from within and outside the family,” he said.
“There are mixed people here and the majority are not familiar with each other and as a result, some entered the place where they were not stopped, and the theft occurred. We are holding two people for interrogation,” he said
However, some of the people who were in the funeral that did not want their names mentioned claimed that some of the people who were involved in the robbery were wearing the IPP tags.
