The Met Gala is an annual benefit event for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is considered one of the world’s biggest fashion events.
It is known for its exclusive guest list, its expensive tickets and most of all its extravagant outfits, based on a different theme each year.
This year, that theme was ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ – to coincide with an upcoming exhibition at the Met, inspired by US writer and political activist Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay, Notes on Camp. The outfits this year were, therefore, like the exhibition, based on “irony, humor, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality and exaggeration”.
Although there were not any iconic looks on the pink carpet many celebrities showed up and showed out like, Quantico star Priyanka Chopra showed up iced out with her husband. Singer Ciara killed it with an emerald green dress and big black hair. Kenyan Hollywood actress Lupita Nyong’o stunned in feathers and afro combs in her hair. Others who brought their ‘A’ game were Nicki Minaj, the Kardashians, singers Janelle Monae, Rita Ora, actors Omari Hardwick, Michael B. Jordan, actress Regina King, and Danai Gurrira.
With that said, there are some who shocked fans with their weird outfit ensembles at the Met Gala.
Singer and ‘A Star is Born’ actress Gaga tops the list with not one but four outfits. She stepped on the pink carpet in a billowing pink gown but went on to theatrically reveal a black gown and pink dress underneath and finally stripped down to her ‘underwear and heeled boots.
Singer Billy Porter is the king of dramatic. His entrance included him being carried by six half-naked men who wore gold pants and accessories while he sat pretty on his ‘throne’. He went on to reveal his gold jumpsuit and wings ensemble.
There were two Jared Leto heads at the 2019 Met Gala as the ‘Suicide Squad’ actor showed up with a mannequin head that looked just like him. He also wore a red robe and topped off his outfit complete with silver accessories.
Ezra Miller’s look was not only weird but creepy as well. He wore a subtle pinstriped pantsuit with a trail, white shirt, mask and silver accessories but it was his unsettling ‘eyes’ make up look that shocked many and probably made people at the event dizzy.
Actor Michael Urie went for two looks in one. His look made him look like he had a split personality, with one side dressed as a man in a pinstriped suit and in the other a woman in a pink tulle dress. Then his accessories and makeup played a game of ‘opposite opposite’ as he wore his single earring, clutch, and makeup on his suit side but went bare for the woman side save for the tattoos on his arm and chest.
Singer Katy Perry roared to life at the pin carpet with a chandelier on her head. Her silver sequined dress and shoes were not good enough for her and she went on to balance candlelit chandeliers on her head and at her hips, the question is how does one even sit with a chandelier at their hips?
Bodak yellow rapper Cardi B impressed many with her red trailed gown which was adorned by feathers but was weird about it was its little details. The dress outlined little nipples as well as belly button on it such that one would think that Cardi was actually showing her body parts.
Which is your favorite weird look at the Met Gala?
