The Seven: Tips that will ease your holiday travel anxiety

Christmas holidays are days away and as a Kenyan tradition, traveling to ‘shags’, outside the country or a preferred tourist destination, like Mombasa, becomes a priority for many. And the last thing one would wish for during holidays is to worry about any of the planned activities going astray.

The following reminders will definitely get you through the entire travel period:

1. Have a to-do list
Making a list of engagements you plan to have is crucial because it is crucial in helping you prioritize your activities. In the list, designate the most important activities like what to buy (including bus or air tickets), pack and what household chores to tackle before you embark on your big trip

2. Reflect on your daily house life
Ensure you take care of your daily utilities including water, rent, and power bills. It would be a nightmare if you came back from a holiday only to find a house without power or disconnected water! If you own a pet, also consider if you might require a pet sitter.

3. Know your destination in advance
If you are traveling to the Kenyan Coast, ensure you know the hotel you will be staying in. For planning purposes, consider your hotel’s location and any additional charges that come with booking. For those visiting the countryside, make a call to your friends and family and inform them of your travel date.

4. Prepare for unforeseen occurrences
Travelling comes with unanticipated happenings hence the need to always be ready. If you intend to road-trip to shags in your car, carry a flashlight, extra wheel, jumper cables, water and most importantly have your car checked prior to departure.

5. Keep busy
For a long distance trip, simply sitting in the car/bus or plane doing nothing often stirs up the boredom. How about substituting it with reading a newspaper, book, magazine or listening to your favorite music to kill the monotony?

6. Keep your essentials close
Whether traveling by plane or bus, personal items like medication, toiletries should always be kept at arm’s length. Some people develop allergies when traveling and you don’t want to throw up on fellow passengers. Be comfortable and enjoy your trip.

7. Try to remain calm
Traveling in December is very hectic as everybody is scrambling to get to their destinations. Personally, you know what normally relaxes you. So, practice those relaxation techniques. Whether it is deep breathing, or taking a nap while on a road trip, stay calm and enjoy the trip.
