The Seven: Reasons Why Your Skin Is Breaking Out

Despite what you might think because of social media, having flawless skin is not as easy as it seems.

Having acne is completely normal. However, if you are particularly struggling with your skin and getting breakouts, here are seven reasons why you might be experiencing this.

1. You are not practicing a consistent skin care routine

A full skin care routine requires many different products but at its most basic level a skin care routine must include a cleanser/face wash, moisturizer and sunscreen. The cleanser is essential for cleaning the face so that your pores don’t clog and cause pimples, moisturizer hydrates the skin so that it does not remain dry. Sunscreen protects the skin from the harsh effects of the sun and UV lighting as well.

2. You are using the wrong products

Everyone reacts differently to different products. Some products may cause you to break out. It is always best to test a product on the back of your hand before using it on your face. If your skin starts breaking out after using a certain product then it is best to stop using it entirely, don’t think that just because you bought it you must finish it. Similarly, if you combine certain products it will cause a breakout so always check what ingredients you can mix. For instance, Retinol should never be used with Vitamin C or Salicylic Acid.

3. You do not have a consistent skin care regimen

The difference between a skin care routine and regimen is that the routine is practiced daily while the regimen is practiced 2-3 times a week. Exfoliating and using face masks should be included into your skin care routine at least twice a week. Exfoliating is achieved through use of a face scrub. It unclogs pores, prevents acne and allows for products to penetrate the skin better. Masks serve many functions including hydrating the skin, evening out the skin tone and removing blemishes.

4. You are not diversifying your skin care products

The same way it is healthy to diversify your diet, it is important to diversify your skin care products. For example, don’t exclusively use a Vitamin C wash, serum and moisturizer every day but try and diversify the prominent ingredients in your products. However, remember to make sure you check before combining different products that they can go together.

5. Your diet

Skin care does not only involve what you put on your skin directly but largely what you put in your body. Foods with high sugar content, white carbs and dairy tend to raise blood sugar levels which cause your oil glands to produce more sebum, increasing your chances of developing acne. Therefore, it is best to switch to complex carbohydrates such as brown rice, legumes and vegetables and fruits. You can also start taking vitamins such A and E supplements and Zinc as well. In addition, eat foods like blueberries that are high in anti-oxidants.

6. You are not drinking enough water

70% of the human body is water, so it comes as no surprise that it is essential for all of your bodily functions to operate properly. By drinking 2-3 liters of water daily, you balance your oil to water ratio on the face, preventing acne. It also allows the skin to heal faster.

7. You’re Hormonal
We started this article by saying that acne is completely normal and human. As such, it can be triggered by human functions especially hormonal changes. For example, many women notice breakouts around their ‘time of the month’. In the same way, using hormonal contraceptives can trigger breakouts. These can be combatted by observing the steps outlined in this blog post.

Do you struggle with breakouts? These tips will come in handy to achieve that flawless skin.
