Britney Spears
Spears established herself as a pop icon during the late 1990s. She is credited with influencing the revival of teen pop. She became the ‘best-selling teenage artist of all time’ before she turned 20, and garnered honorific titles including the “Princess of Pop”. Her work has earned her many awards and accolades, including a Grammy Award, six MTV Video Music Awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award, nine Billboard Music Awards.
Spears has had countless controversial moments. The performance of her hit “I’m a Slave 4 U” at the 2001 MTV VMAs raised eyebrows as Miss Spears did it with an albino python draped on her shoulders and a caged tiger on stage. The performance cost her anti-fur campaign with PETA. After her breakup with Justin Timberlake, her musical war with him took the entertainment scene by storm. Both artistes released veiled diss tracks but Spears came out as more provocative and hard-hitting. Perhaps her craziest moment was her 55 hour marriage to Jason Alexander. The couple got married in Vegas but broke up 55 hours later.
In 2007, Britney nearly went crazy. She shaved off her head and attacked paparazzi with umbrellas. She had to go to rehab to get back on track. Her video for the hit single “Criminal’ is also one of the most controversial pop videos ever.
