Strathmore Debate Club has partnered with the Kenya National Debate Council to host the 2nd

Inter-Varsity Debate Competition to be held on 7th – 8th June, 2013.The theme of this year’s competition is ‘Fostering Youth Participation in Public Affairs.’

The event will involve debate competitions between different teams from different universities and also a public speaking contest. Each debating team will be comprised of two people from the same university and each university can provide a maximum of four debating teams. A total of 32 teams are expected to participate. The public speaking contest will involve speakers from different universities who will be required to make both prepared and impromptu speeches. All topics debated and presented in this competition will be geared towards this year’s theme.

Universities that have confirmed attendance are: UON, USIU, Catholic, Daystar, KU, JKUAT, St Pauls, Kabianga and the hosts Strathmore.

The competition will kick off on 7th with the preliminaries being held. KNDC will provide judges for the competition. Every debate and public speaking contest will be judged by an odd number of judges.

Upon completion of the preliminary stage, the results will be announced during the following day upon which the quarter finals will kick off. The finals are scheduled to be held at 2p.m after which the various winners will be awarded and the guests will make short speeches. The winners of this year’s competition will represent Kenya in the Pan-African Universities Debate Competition to be held in Nigeria later in the year

Away from the competition, the aim of this event is to give university students a platform on which they can share and generate ideas on good leadership. The forum aims at nurturing youths who are well aware of the problems facing their society and who have critically weighed the solutions at hand by way of debate.

Strathmore Debate Club has invited guests from the Pan-African Leadership Foundation and the Youth Agenda. We are also in contact with Citizen TV which hosts the Great Debaters Competition in a quest to have the event receive coverage.

Any help in marketing the event will be highly appreciated. The event is not locked off to participants only and members of the general public are invited to attend.
