Texas Uni students divert yacht using false GPS signals

Yacht

There are some people you simply don’t give a challenge. Like a team of engineering students at University of Texas at Austin. The students wanted to prove internal GPS systems can be cracked to give false directions, making it easier to hijack ships, cars, airplanes etc.

According to Mashable, the team commandeered a yacht sailing off the coast of Italy by sending spoof signals toward the ship’s GPS antennas. After some time, the spoof signals were stronger than the yacht’s normal satellite signals. The students demonstrated how an ‘attacker’ could take control of the ship’s navigation system remotely.
