Tech Talk: YouTube content creators to get special enrollment into Indonesian University

Starting from July 12th, YouTube content creators with over 10, 000 subscribers on their channels will get a chance to join Jakarta University in Indonesia. The lucky YouTube stars must have created content which has been viewed not less than 100,000 times and the content created must be meaningful and educative.

In an excerpt appearing on the Jakarta Post  the university’s website, National Development University Veteran Jakarta (UPNVJ) made the announcement this week on Friday (21.06.2019) citing that YouTubers who have at least 10,000 subscribers may enroll at the university through special admission.

The special program is open for high ranking YouTube content creators, outstanding athletes, and high school student council leaders who have served for more than a year. “We think YouTube is a great media to convey positive messages effectively to society,” Erna Hernawati, the University’s Vice-Chancellor (rector) told The Jakarta Post. “We want those accepted in the university to convey positive messages and influence society for the better.”

However, Erna said that YouTubers who want to apply through the special admissions scheme would be screened by a committee to ensure their channels only publish positive content. “We will not accept those uploading provocative content. We will also test the applicants’ skills by requiring them to make a two-to-three-minute video on campus. So, if you have 10,000 subscribers, you are not automatically admitted,” she said.

A similar test will be given to athletes and student council leaders applying for the scheme, she said. Those who pass would then have to take a computer-based written test to measure their academic knowledge.  The university offering this special academic program said the enrolment is restricted to those planning on studying social and Political Science, Law, Engineering, Economics, and Computer Science. It does not include Medicine and Pharmacy courses.

Indonesia which has a population of over 260 Million has a high university intake each year and a populous social media use with research indicating that on average people spend 2 – 3 hours online.

The registration for this novel admission will end on 21st July.
