Strathmore University held its 11th graduation ceremony, in an event that saw the awarding of 790 graduates in different fields of study. Dr. Lucy N. Gikonyo was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Hospitality Management and Melvin Abes Ballera a Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science. Out of the 790 graduates 48 percent were women, including the most outstanding student Mercy Akoth, who received the Chancellors Award 2015.
The University Council chair Mrs. Bernadette Musundi encouraged the graduands to adopt to the new changes with great strides. While giving her address, Mrs. Musundi described the university as an honorable institution that has produced great graduates, making the university the preferred choice for private universities; following a survey that was recently conducted.
“To our graduands, you are well branded, certainly high expectations will be made. You will excel,” she said. Mrs. Musundi also echoed Martin Luther King, Jr.’s words saying, the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
The Vice Chancellor Strathmore University, Prof. John Odhiambo praised the graduates, the teaching faculty and all non-teaching staff , for playing a diligent role in leading the students to success. He underlined the key role of serving the society and encouraged graduates to serve the community with dignity. “ Go out there and work for equity and equality; challenge and drive out corruption in both public and private sectors” he sensitized.

In his speech, Pro-Chancellor Rev. Dr. Silvanno Ochuodho encouraged the graduates to forge forth into the industry keeping in mind that their success will depend greatly on themselves and their determination. He advised them not to give up even when faced with challenges, but to remember each of their success is defined by how they handle the challenges thrown their way. He emphasized that perseverance is key to beating all odds and emerging at the top.
The ceremony culminated with outstanding students in various schools, academics, sports, community service and the chancellors’ awards being awarded for their tremendous work. Those who received the Dean’s awards included: Achilles Kiwanuka- FIT, Faith Karimi-FIT, Jeptoo Kipkech -FIT, Akoth Mercy-SFAE, Reuben Muhindi -SFAE, Grace Waithira -SFAE, Sharon Chekrui- and Agnes Wambui -CTH. The awards for the Sportsman of the year went to Kakembo Luide Kakembo while the award for the Sportswoman of the year went to Damaris Namulanda. Rosemary Wambui Muturi received the Community Service Centre award.
The university, for the first time, had a graduation app that included details of different schools and programme for the day.
