Stereo Fresh: Summer Walker breaks RnB streaming records with debut album ‘Over It’

Newbie Summer Walker is on the up and up, and there’s no stopping her.

Summer Walker’s debut album ‘Over It’ has made history breaking streaming records for any RnB album ever. The ‘Playing Games’ crooner made quite an impression on the Billboard charts. According to a report, “the set was released on Oct. 4 via LVRN/Interscope Records and launches at No. 2 with 134,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Oct. 10, according to Nielsen Music. Over It logs the biggest week, in terms of units earned, for an R&B album by a female artist in over three years. The last R&B album by a woman to notch a larger week was Beyoncé’s Lemonade in 2016.”

More importantly, Walker is also changing the narrative on digital music consumption for RnB music too. Billboard also reported, “Over It’s starting sum of 134,000 units was largely powered by streaming activity, as the set garnered 14,000 album sales, 1,000 TEA units, and 119,000 SEA units. The latter figure translates to a big 154.7 million on-demand audio streams for the album’s songs — marking the largest streaming week ever for an R&B album by a woman in terms of on-demand audio streams.”

Summer’s first project ‘Last Day of Summer’ was a mixtape released on October 19th, 2018, which was well-received but did not enjoy as much success as her most recent project  ‘Over It.’ The debut album from the 23-year-old features collaborations with A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Jhene Aiko, Usher, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Bryson Tiller and more.

The top track by far is her solo track ‘Girls Need Love.’

Summer follows SZA, H.E.R and Ella Mai to change up the sound and feel of RnB.
