Kenyan rapper Octopizzo has announced that his album Jungle Fever has been selected for Grammy consideration, joining fellow artistes Victoria Kimani and Gabiro Mtu Necessary as the only other Kenyan acts to achieve the feat this year.
The fashionable Ivo Ivo rapper made the announcement on his official social media platforms, while also revealing that he will be dropping a new album on Friday, to coincide with Jungle Fever’s 1st year anniversary. “I had to do it twice so that they know it wasn’t luck. This Saturday will be Jungle Fever’s 1 Year Anniversary; Excited to be up for 4 Grammy consideration categories @recordingacademy. Best Global Music, Best Global Performance, Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance. One day I’ll bring this to Kibera, I believe,” he announced.
The Recording Academy raked him in on the list of Kenyan musicians to be considered for prospective Grammy nods, with not just the album but also his album cuts Lela ( feat Suzanna Owiyo) and Pockets/Interlude in the Best Global Music Performance and Best Rap Song/Performance categories respectively.
He further added that his producer snagged a Grammy nod in the Best Producer Non-Classical category. To cap it all off, the renowned rapper, who rose to prominence in the early 2010s, dropped the bombshell that Fuego, his new album drops November Friday 19.
Octopizzo now joins fellow music meteors Victoria Kimani and Gabiro Mtu Necessary as the Kenyan artistes with considerations for Grammy nominations this year. Kimani’s 4th studio album Spirit Animal and Gabiro’s EP Jenesis are up for consideration in the Best Global Music Album category.
While the nominees will be announced November 23, the 64th Grammys will take place on January 22 next year.
