He is witty, confident and with an authoritative voice to boot. The kind of qualities that effortlessly see him take over a room as soon as he walks in.
Rapper Lyqo, real name Nelson Otieno, is a shrewd multi-hyphenated lyricist-cum-rapper-cum-producer. With such versatility under his belt, even he finds it complex to describe himself as just one thing. “I’m a creative and approach everything in a purely and uniquely artistic way, in a way that seeks to break the boundaries of art itself.”
Lyqo juggles a lot of things, majorly oscillating between writing and producing. His love for production, he says, stemmed out of his frustration with other producers not giving him exactly what he wanted. “It can get a tad overwhelming but I absolutely enjoy doing it, so there is that. Being able to execute and bring ideas to life is the ultimate reward for me,” He says.
With Moon Rise, Lyqo is more than ready to showcase what he is made of. The project will come harbouring multiple genres and sounds. “There is a whole lot of good vibes. There is HipHop, Afropop, RnB et al. I’m in my quest to serve everyone what they love.”
What does he think about the new crop of artistes in Kenya? “There is breath of fresh air. We are working, breaking the mold and the dogma. We are exploring new territories and putting good music out. I want to collaborate with Xenia Manasseh, Boutross Munene, Karun, Buruklyn Boyz, Barak Jacuzzi, Khaligraph Jones and Nikita Kering’. I like all of their music and art.
Lyqo’s EP drops on Friday, December 7.
