Univesity of Nairobi students clashed with anti-riot police for the better part of Monday. Running battles between the protesting students and GSU officers spilled over inside the campus after the police pushed back the students.
The SONU office, which is located within the main campus along University way, was torched by enraged students as property within the campus was also destroyed. Motorists were not spared either. Stones were hurled at drivers using the Uhuru highway-Museum hill interchange. University way and Mamlaka road were a no-go zone area for the better part of the day.
A video circulating in social media shows approximately 100 students cornered by GSU and being paraded to be caned by GSU officers.
The demonstrating students took to the streets on Sunday after incumbent SONU chairman Babu Owino was re-elected in a disputed election.
A section of the comrade fraternity insist Owino’s challenger, Mike Jacobs was the duly elected student chairman, vowing that the demos would continue until the elections are canceled.
Meanwhile, Babu Owino maintains he was legally elected by a majority of students. He garnered 18,000 against Jacob’s 3,000 and was sworn in on Saturday.
Jacob’s supporters have vowed to oust the DVC Prof Mbeche and to swear in Jacobs at the main campus today at 11am.
