President Donald J. Trump is now in hot water over insensitive remarks that Twitter deemed inflammatory, and he might just have to face some sort of consequences.
Donald Trump has often had many question his sense of empathy and situation management as a leader, and now his recent actions have just gone to show that his true colors.
Taking to social media site, President of the United States of America went on to rant about the wrongful murder of an unarmed African man George Floyd in the streets of Minneapolis. According to reports on The Guardian, Floyd, a 46-year-old African American man, died in police custody after a white officer handcuffed him and kneeled on his neck for several minutes as Floyd pleaded that he could not breathe.
The police misconduct that was captured and shared on social media infuriated many, leading to a slew of riots breaking out through out the city of Minneapolis, from yesterday (29.05.2020). Sadly, no legal action has been taken quite yet against the police officers, though they were fired on Tuesday (26.5.2020).
According to The Guradian, the FBI in Minneapolis is conducting “a robust criminal investigation” into the death and making the case a priority. The officer who kneeled on Floyd and three others were fired on Tuesday.
Adding insult to injury, Trump took to Twitter sharing his opinion of the polarizing affair. The reality star turned president, went on to blame the Mayor of Minneapolis Jacob Frey for the rioting and looting by thousands of angered citizens who went out in protest of the gruesome murder of George Floyd.
In addition to his out of pocket comment, he went on to insist that the military would be ready to return the city to normalcy, by use of force. Branding the protesters as thugs, Trump went on to state “when the looting starts, the shooting starts.”
Twitter promptly responded to these maddening comments, pointing out that indeed POTUS had broken the terms and conditions for use of the networking site. The statement shared noted, “This Tweet violated the Twitter Rules about glorifying violence. However, Twitter has determined that it may be in the public’s interest for the Tweet to remain accessible.”
Lashing out, Trump signed an executive order against social media sites such as Twitter, to protect and uphold free speech today (29.5.2020). He called for new regulations to make it that social media sites that engage in censoring or any political conduct will not be able to keep their liability shied.
George Floyd’s passing is evidence of the increase in cases of police brutality against the African American community. In Minneapolis, racial tensions have grown as the African American community has been continually targeted by authorities, with many being victims of police brutality and misconduct.
According to the U.S Census Bureau, “between 2010 and 2018, the fastest growing racial group in Minnesota was the Black or African American population, which grew by 36%, adding more than 96,500 people.”
