With the nation slowly getting back to its feet, it seems that there are still a few obstacles the great nation of Kenya must overcome to truly find its way back to titanic levels of progress. According to the SokoDirectory website, it is reported in the “United Nations in the Human Development Index (HDI) 2017 reports, the rate of unemployment in Kenya is the highest in the East African region hitting a new high at 39.1 percent. This makes it the highest than its neighboring Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda.”
With Honorable Uhuru Kenyatta declared as President Elect on 11th August 2017, there are a few key points he hopes to actualize during his second term in office. The manifesto that was launched in late June 2017 before the nation went to the polls, has specific pledges targeted at the advancement of the nation’s youth. Here are some of the more important points all youth should be aware of as Uhuru takes office for the second term:
1. “We will create at least 6.5 million jobs over five years so that our youth can secure good jobs so that they can enjoy a decent life,” said the President. This averages 1.3M jobs per a year through out his 5 year tenure, which translates to approximately 108,333 jobs per a month. These jobs are set to be more industrial in nature, with more focus on transport, ICT and energy infrastructure sectors.
2.According to the Presidential campaign’s website, H.E Uhuru Kenyatta hopes “to establish a government sponsored apprenticeship program of up to 12 months for all university and TVET graduates.” This means that recent graduates will receive work experience straight out of college. The implementation of this program could reduce the number of graduates who struggle to find employment for lack experience.

3.Expanding the free primary school program to include free day public secondary schools in Kenya. With primary school education already available for Kenyan youth, the availability of free secondary education could further the number of Kenyan citizens who hold a Kenyan certificate for secondary education, thereby reducing illiteracy levels in the nation.
4. To make government more transparent and accountable through the digitization of all government procurement; expand and deliver e-government services through the growing network of Huduma Centres. The manifesto that had many considerations to improve the lives of youth also includes improving government systems to ensure improved access to government services including business registration and the awarding of tenders.
With the #TurudiKaziniChallenge taking center stage on social media, it is vital that the youth understand what should be delivered to them, and more importantly how they can work with the government to improve their lives.
