Police on Saturday carried out a raid at the University of Nairobi hostels and recovered an assortment of crude weapons, together with 25kgs of Bhang, police sweater and boots, watchmen’s uniforms, nine pangas as well as bloodstained knives. Police also recovered a money-making machine and numerous fake notes.
The eight-hour sting operation was undertaken in a bid to recover guns and drugs. The operation was largely concentrated around hall nine, which is suspected to harbour criminals.
The operation was carried out by joint officers from the Special Crimes Prevention Unit, Flying squad and Anti-Narcotics Unit.
Police were acting after a tip-off by Nacada Chairman John Mututho, claiming the university was operating a drug cartel and alleging some senior government officials were shielding the drug barons who include students.
Police from Kileleshwa Police Station received numerous reports of victims violently being robbed at gun point by criminals they believed to be students from UoN.
Students are alleged to have received a tip-off prior to search being conducted and were able to carry away the suspected firearms and other narcotics.
Sources revealed that police had already been issued the names of suspected drug peddlers and notorious criminals who were students.
