Famed comedian and radio host Jalang’o hosted John Otieno “Owago Onyiro” Byron, on YouTube for a candid discussion on his ventures in comedy and more who cooking up some tasty fish and ugali.
Owago has recently gained attention online, for switching lanes from comedy to home cooking service. In their discussion, the duo discussed the financial difficulties that have come with the novel coronavirus, as well as new coping mechanisms for those looking to flourish despite the uncertain times. Jalang’o also known as Jalas remarked “tough times need tough measures, that’s what we are talking about.”
Owago who now offers a home cooked delivery service pointed out that although the current situation has affected businesses and entrepreneurs alike, it is vital that one diversify so as to make the most of the situation. Once a mainstay on the popular Churchill Live Show, Owago addressed rumors that Daniel Ndambuki popularly known as Churchill is not paying comedians who perform on his prime time television show.
Owage shared a few nuggets of wisdom to all the young comedians who expect their television appearance to pay their bills. First and foremost, he noted, “kwenyu atakama baba yako ni mchawi, usishinde ukitangaza mjini…hio haimanishi nimesema Churchill halipi watu. Churchill analipa watu.”
He went on to point out that the payment received is only an appreciation of sorts, not an actual salary. Owago said, “Comedians depend on Churchill too much…amekupatia platform.” The Peptang brand ambassador went on to add a great analogy stating “when you were going to school your father used to give you pocket money, that is what Churchill is giving us. He cannot be giving you plus salary.” He advised artists, to use the opportunities given on Churchill Live to build their brands and grow themselves.
He also went on to urge comedians in public life, to live within their means. He pointed out that it is disheartening to see comedic acts living up to the expectations of the public. He went on to commend Eric Omondi, Chipukeezy, MCA Trick and MC Sleepy for making the most of the Churchill Show platform to build themselves up as a brand.
Going by the moniker Owago Onyiro, John stepped into the limelight performing on Churchill Raw in 2014. A former lecturer at St. Paul’s University, Owago is not new to leveraging his abilities to attain success. He currently delivers home cooked meals, putting his cooking skills to good use. He credits his mother for teaching him how to cook.
