Oprah Winfrey forfeits the cover of O Magazine to feature Breonna Taylor

Oprah Winfrey has stepped back from the cover of her monthly magazine to instead raise awareness for police brutality victim Breonna Taylor.

The 66-year-old media mogul has graced the cover of every single issue of O: The Oprah Magazine since its inception in 2000, but the September issue will make history as the first edition to not feature Oprah on the cover, with the issue instead dedicated to the late Breonna Taylor.

Breonna – who was 26 when she died – features on the cover in the form of an intricate drawing, and comes after she was fatally shot by three Louisville Metro Police Department officers in March.

Sharing a picture of the cover on social media, Oprah also posted a moving tribute to the emergency medical technician (EMT).

She wrote: “Breonna Taylor. She was just like me. She was just like you. And like everyone who dies unexpectedly, she had plans. Plans for a future filled with responsibility and work and friends and laughter. I think about Breonna Taylor often. Imagine if three unidentified men burst into your home while you were sleeping. And your partner fired a gun to protect you. And then mayhem.

“What I know for sure: We can’t be silent. We have to use whatever megaphone we have to cry for justice. And that is why Breonna Taylor is on the cover of O, the Oprah Magazine. The September issue honors her life and the life of every other Black woman whose life as been taken too soon.

The historic cover will be one of the last issues available in print, as it was recently revealed the publication will become “more digitally centric” at the end of the year.

In a statement, a representative for Hearst Magazines said: “As the brand celebrates twenty years of O, The Oprah Magazine, we’re thinking about what’s next, but again the partnership and the brand are not going away.

“This is a natural next step for the brand, which has grown to an online audience of 8 million, extending its voice and vision with video and social content.

Winfrey’s latest column advocates for readers to “continue the fight” for Taylor. She lists several calls to action including signing a Change.org petition to demand justice, calling elected officials, donating to the Louisville Community Bail Fund and using the hashtag #SayHerName on social media.

“We will continue to invest in this platform as the brand grows and evolves into one that is more digitally centric.”
Celebrities like Winfrey have in recent months been using their platforms to keep the conversation going about Taylor’s death and to call for the arrest of the police officers behind it.
O, The Oprah Magazine launched as a personal growth guide to help women live their best lives. The September issue comes out August 11.
