The Olympic Games are currently being held at Brazil’s capital, Rio De Janiero. The event will have athletes from across the globe compete for a top spot on the podium as well  as the pride with coming to represent their countries at the highest level. To become an Olympian, there are certain criteria one should fulfill before packing their bags to participate in the games.

Among one of the most stringent of qualifications, is the age limit. In the past, there have been competitors as old as 72 years. This years summer games has seen 65 year old Julie Bourgham represented New Zealand riding against competitors even half her age.

This year has also seen Gaurika Singh an earthquake survivor from Nepal, participate in the games at only age 13 . The young swimmer has shattered national swimming records and continues to make history despite her pubescent age. After migrating to Britain with her family, Gaurika’s training has seen her be part of multiple swimming championships. In the year of 2016 alone, Gaurika has won one silver and three bronze medals at the 2016 South Asian Games.  In her Olympic debut, Gaurika made the best of her experience making the fastest time in her heat. Although she did not make it to the finals the athlete come in 31st overall standings.

The Olympics foster patriotism not only for the lucky few who participate in the ancient games, but they also remind us of the determination and strength of man. With competitors young and old, rich and poor even refugees, the Olympics is a true celebration of the triumph of the human spirit. We are reminded that the cheerful gymnast Simone Biles is one of us and the determined rugby player and cancer survivor Jillion Potter is a shining example of what one can truly overcome.

So though we sit in our living rooms and watch the true athletes jump, swim and sweat their way through the Rio heat, there is something we can all take from this year Summer Olympic Games. The human spirit is strong and determined, able to overcome unimaginable obstacles and emerge victorious.
