Nine students sue Google for monitoring their emails

A group of students in California are suing Google, claiming the company is violating their privacy rights by monitoring emails, according to Mashable. A district court in the Northern District in California is hearing the complaint from nine students whose email were subject to Google surveillance.

The students are seeking class-action certification for the case, according to Mashable. This could lead to millions in payments for Gmail if the suit is successful. The students claim the use of Apps for Education, which is part of Google, captured their details through a Gmail component.

A Google rep told Education Week that the company scans and indexes emails from all Apps for Education users. The company uses the data for potential advertising, among other purposes.
