Nicki Minaj is keen to elevate her music, drawing from her Caribbean roots. Her latest release ‘Megatron’ has been dubbed a ‘bop’ and it might be all because she sampled the dancehall classic by Chaka Demus and Pliers ‘Murder She Wrote.’
Nicki Minaj has just released the single ‘Megatron’ where she features her new beau Kenny Petty. The couple looks cozy in the seductive video that is quite similar to the ‘Anaconda’ official video release in 2014 from the PinkPrint album. The visuals are crisp and colorful as she teases her man in various scenes throughout the video. The Mike Ho production also features Minaj setting fire to a green Lamborgini and a series of sensual dance scenes, that Nikki the Ninja does oh so well. Minaj has remained relatively busy in 2019 collaborating with several acts including Chris Brown in the single ‘Wobble Up,’ and ‘How You Wanna’ by Lil Pump and Tyga, and is set to release more solo tracks.
Only hours after the release of ‘Megatron,’ Minaj has received great props from fans, though many seem disappointed by the autotune used to enhance her voice throughout the release. The lyrics lack content, but the hook is catchy, making it a great track to get any party started. The track has received 1M views on YouTube just 5 hours of its release on YouTube.
Born in Saint James on the Caribbean island of Trinidad and Tobago, Onika Tanya Maraj is set to talk about her new music on her Apple Music podcast Queens Radio. Heavily influenced by her Trini roots and her upbringing in New York, Minaj’s ‘Megatron’ is the meeting point of both sounds and complex cultures. She also sampled the same track on her collaboration with Moroccan rapper French Montana in the 2013 release “Freaks.”
Nicki Minaj is not the only artist to sample the Chaka Demus and Plier iconic track. Nigerian heavyweight Patoranking and Seyi Shay sampled the track’s iconic lyrics in their collaboration “Murda.” Jamaican-Brit star Stefflon Don also sampled the track’s beat in her 2016 collaboration with Jeremih dubbed “Tight Nooki.” New Yorker Frankie Cutlass also sampled the track in 1993 in the release ‘Wede Man‘.
Chaka Demus and Plier released the song ‘Murder She Wrote’ in 1992. The dancehall track has remained a hit for more than 2 decades and continues to inspire artists across the globe.
Do you think Nicki did justice to the track?
