Streaming giant Netflix has recently announced that its first African Original Series ‘Queen Sono’ has been renewed for a second season.
The six-part spy-thriller, written by Kagiso Lediga and starring Pearl Thusi as the lead actress alongside Vuyo Dabula, Chiedza Mhende and Kate Liquorish, premiered at the end of February and received rave reviews across the board.
The audience was introduced to Queen (Thusi), a secret agent for the Special Operations Group (SOG). We gradually began to understand her relentless quest to find the person that killed her political activist-mother and the forces which wanted to keep the truth buried for as long as possible.
The second season will see Queen continuing to search for the truth as her newfound need for revenge takes her on a mission across Africa in addition to dealing with her family’s past and complicated love life.

Speaking about his brainchild returning to the screen, Lediga says, “I am so excited by the appetite for African stories and that Netflix is continuing to partner with us to bring to life the next chapter of Queen’s story and showcase it to the world.”
Now, off the heels of its wildly successful ‘Queen Sono’ Netflix has announced that it’s now working on its next African Original Series titled JIVA!.
The dance drama series will again be lead by a South African female actress, Noxolo Dlamini, in addition to a strong, star-studded supporting cast.
JIVA!, a South African slang term which translates to ‘dance’, is a drama series which will tell the story of a talented street dancer called Ntombi, who while juggling the demands of a dead-end job, family responsibility and a complex love life, realises that her choreography could be her ticket out of her working-class neighbourhood in Durban. However, in order to succeed, she must first overcome her fears, thrash her rivals and attempt to resolve some of the problems in her family.
Dlamini, who will play the lead a role, has starred in the stage production of the 1992 classic film Sarafina as well as popular local series Isibaya.
The premiere date for the second season of Queen Sono is yet to be announced. Further details of production and premiere dates of JIVA! are also yet to be announced.
