Critically acclaimed Kenyan movie ‘Nairobi Half Life’ is now showing on Netflix and is among the top 10 movies on the site this week.
2012 was a good year for the Kenyan film scene and 10 years later, the only way for the industry is up with the onset of streaming platforms like Netflix.
Released on October 11th 2012, ‘Nairobi Half Life’ changed the trajectory of how Kenyans view homegrown films and talents. The film tells the story of an aspiring actor from Kenya making a living selling western action films tries to follow his dreams of becoming successful in a big city.
The film which was directed by David ‘Tosh’ Gitoga stars Joseph Wairimu as Mwas, the late Olwenya Maina, Nancy Wanjiku alias Shix Kapyenga, Paul Ogola, Mugambi Nthiga among many others.
The film was the first-ever Kenyan film to be selected for Best Foreign Language Oscar category at the 85th Academy Awards, but did not make the final shortlist.
The film has also been screened at over 150 film festivals around the world, won innumerable awards and screened almost an entire year in Kenyan cinemas.
‘Nairobi Half Life’ is the latest Kenyan body of work to be shown on the international streaming platform following the likes of ‘Subira’, ‘Disconnect’ and ‘Poacher’.
