Netflix and chill with a collection of African made films

Netflix continues to expand its focus on African content with the launch of its ‘Made In Africa’ collection, which will run throughout the month of May in conjunction with Africa Month.

The collection features over 100 titles that were made on the continent. Netflix originals like South Africa’s ‘Queen Sono’ starring Pearl Thusi, as well as previously acquired films like Nigeria’s ‘King of Boys’, ‘Wedding Party’, and the Genevieve Nnaji-directed ‘Lionheart’ and more are all apart of the collection.

Other titles include the Malawian-based movie ‘The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind’, ‘Jerusalema’, ‘Uncovered’, ‘Potato Potahto, Joy’ and several others.

‘Made In Africa’ also includes films that were predominantly shot on the ground in various countries, like the 2015 film ‘Beast of No Nation’, which was shot in Ghana, 2006’s ‘Blood Diamond’ (South Africa, Sierra Leone, and Morocco), and the documentary ‘Virunga’ (Congo) to name a few.

“We’re excited to celebrate African stories and storytellers,” says Ben Amadasun, Netflix’s Director of Licensing and Co-productions for Africa. “We hope that by making these ‘Made in Africa’ titles easily available we will help ensure they are watched around the world.”

Last month, the streaming giant announced the renewal of its first African original ‘Queen Sono’ as well as the upcoming release of two new originals: ‘Blood & Water’ described as “a world of mystery, raw family dynamics and light-hearted relief,” and the dance series ‘JIVA!’, which is currently in production.
