Needy Students Awarded Wings To Fly And A Chance At A Better Future

Two girls who were brought up in a children’s home are among the 13 bright but needy 2016 KCPE candidates who bagged a four-year Equity BankWings to Fly scholarship to a secondary school. Alice Ngonyo and her colleague at ACK St Stephen’s Children home, Elly Joy Mwende inched closer to their dream of becoming doctors when they were picked for the charity.

The two who were students at Werus Academy, overcame all odds to score 423 and 406 marks respectively, in last year’s KCPE. Ngonyo also emerged the best female candidate in Embu County. Speaking during the flagging off of the 13 students, Alice who was admitted to Alliance Girls’ was overcome by joy, narrating how she lived a destitute life in Juja, Kiambu County before a well-wisher took her to the home run by the Embu ACK church.

 

“My mother could not take care of me and I was brought up by my great-grandmother. I was really struggling since my goal is to succeed in life. I promise to do well,” she said.

Embu Equity bank manager, George Maina said 106 candidates applied for the scholarship before the seven boys and six girls were selected. He also revealed the scholarship will cater for fees, books, shopping and pocket money. “We had several home visits which were conducted for three consecutive days to establish the degree of need,” he said.
