‘Megarider’ is hailed as Nameless’ first song that led him to stardom, way back in 1999. Nameless also known as David Mathenge was a university student 20 years ago working a night shift job in a bank when he took his chance and entered himself in a talent search competition. He made a call into Capital FM’s Hits Not Homework then hosted by Muthoni Bwika, and after dropping some bars he was shortlisted in the music talent competition.

Nameless explains to his surprise, he won the competition, and because he was not well prepared, and didn’t want to disclose his real identity for fear of being reprimanded by his employer, called himself “Nameless” when Muthoni asked him his name on air. His prize was a chance to record a song with the top producer Ted Josiah, with whom he recorded his first single ‘Megarider’, the vocals were done by his then campus girlfriend who later became his wife, Wahu Kagwi.

A Megarider was a bus ticket that gave frequent bus users a special discount in the 1990s and early 2000s. The original song was a satirical song about this Nairobi campus student who tried to make the little that he had worked for him. It talked about his challenges to focus in school, his challenges with girls, his love for fun, music and the pressures of society.

Is Megarider a hit or a miss?
