Movie Review: Joker critiques the status quo and peels back disturbing truths on mental health

The Joker 2019 release has received an interesting reception.

The 2-hour long movie is grim, dark and somber giving the background to what made the Joker the DC villain, fans have come to know and love. The movie that was released on August 31st, 2019 has seen mixed reviews despite it taking a more artistic expression for the complex and deranged life of Joker. Running parallels to life as we know it today, it is a sort of social commentary on the world, its evils and its effects on the innocent and helpless.

Starring Joaquin Phoenix as ‘Joker,’  the Todd Phillips-directed production strayed from the norm and instead exposed a dark and disturbing present most fans may not have been prepared for. That said, Joaquin gave a convincing performance, embodying the character well on-screen. With many eager to understand Joker’s backstory, this movie might offer some answers but lacks direction in other aspects of the Joker -Batman relationship that are essential to the DC Comics universe and its relevant dynamics.

According to a report on CNN, “despite hand-wringing about the movie — and doubtless in part, because of it — “Joker” opened to an estimated $96 million in North America — a record box-office haul for the month of October — and $235 million worldwide. Those results prompted inevitable headlines about “Joker” overcoming the naysaying and laughing all the way to the bank. ”

The movie has already been awarded the Golden Lion award, at the 76th Venice International Film Festival.

It receives a 4.2/5 rating.
