The Institute of Capacity Building (ICB) in collaboration with the Copenhagen Business School – Executive (CBS-E) and Mount Kenya University launched Executive Masters of Business Administration (EMBA) program on 9th January 2014. This followed the approval of the EMBA curriculum by MKU Senate on August 30th 2013. According to the Director of ICB, Dr. Jane Njuru, the main reason for launching this unique program is to respond to the changing needs of Kenyan and East African businesses operating locally, regionally, and internationally.

The EMBA Advisor, Dr. Niels Arnfred observed that the initiative is in cognizant of the fact that classical Master of Business Adminsitration programs (MBA) are based on theory, supplemented with pre-written case studies. In ICB’s opinion, such learning model is not sufficient as in a globalized world, African business leaders are increasingly expected to act proactively to create growth, expand business regionally and internationally while creating sustainable job opportunities.

MKU-EMBA is highly interactive, using a practical group based “live” problem solving approach. It aims at transforming the executives into innovative business leaders who will in turn be competent to realise the potential of the business organization and the people they lead. In particular, it will equip the participants with tools and concepts within a holistic perspective to understand business organizations and how they can be developped in an international context.

This “hands-on” type of EMBA program has been successfully offered since 1993 by the Scandinavian International Management Institute (SIMI) in Copenhagen.  The Institute is now part of the Copenhagen Business School foundation, CBS-Executive (CBS-SIMI)). The program was in 2006 fully accredited by European Program Accreditation System (EPAS) under European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD). Elements of the same learning methodology are being applied at most international business schools in Europe including IMD (Switzerland), London Business School (UK), and INSEAD (France).

MKU-EMBA had atatrcted high profile participants from both private and public sectors. The program is offered in a small interactive class, carefully composed for peer learning to ensure intensive personal leadership development component and experiential learning through solving real problems in companies and organizations. Evaluation is through presentations of business strategies that add direct value to the organization/company.

The schedule is convenient and flexible to suit executives – weekend classes at a Serene place in Kilimani area. MKU-EMBA is delivered by local and international faculty employing international quality processes. The program is uniquely designed for business professionals consisting of three modules – participants graduate after each module (Post-Graduate Certificate, Post-Graduate Diploma, MBA-Degree)
