Social media is awash with congratulatory messages for Miss South Africa who was just crowned as Miss Universe 2019.
Zozibini Tunzi was crowned Miss Universe Sunday night (08.12.19) after excelling through rounds of swimsuit and evening gown struts, questions on social issues and one final chance to explain why she was the right choice.
Miss Tunzi is the first dark skinned contestant to win the coveted crown since Miss Angola in 2011. She is also the third Miss South Africa to win the international pageant after Margaret Gardiner in 1978 and Demi Leigh Nel Peters in 2017.
The two runners-up for the crown were Miss Mexico and Miss Puerto Rico. The massive competition was hosted at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.
Miss Myanmar, Swe Zin Htet, who says she’s the first openly gay contestant. Miss Kenya Stacy Michuki unfortunately was not placed in the top 20 out of the 90 contestants.
Last year’s winner, Catriona Gray from the Philippines spoke during Sunday’s pageant, saying the past year has been “unforgettable, life-changing and purposeful.”
