Matiang’i freezes opening of satellite campuses, says ‘madness must stop’

Education Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has ordered the Commission for University Education to suspend issuing permits to Universities to expand their reach through satellite campuses.

Matiang’i said the government has stepped in to rein in what he sees as out-of-control extension of campuses in different cities and towns in Kenya and neighboring countries.

“We cannot allow this madness to continue in the education sector. We must put a stop to it,” he said during the launch of the Engineering Departments’ Baseline Survey in Nairobi.

Matiang’i said universities are flouting minimum standards of entry requirements for students and that some of the campuses do not have the facilities and personnel to provide quality education.

“What is the rationale behind 26 universities having satellite campuses in Nakuru or Nairobi and both offering training in MBAs? We cannot allow this to continue,” said the CS.

The CS also cautioned public universities against securing commercial loans for expansion saying some of the universities may struggle to pay the loans.

Demand for tertiary education has pushed the rapid growth of universities which have responded by opening satellite campuses.
