Makerere University Business School

Makerere University Business School has been ranked the best University in East Africa in using Information Communication Technology (ICT) to teach and enhance communication between faculty and students. Strathmore University and Uganda’s Busitema University came second and third respectively.

The survey, released this morning, was conducted by CPS Research International between April and October 2012 with the aim of assessing the extent to which higher education institutions in the region have embraced the use of ICT in teaching and enhancing quality of education.

“The results of this survey have been used to rank the to 100 institutions of higher education in East Africa that have institutionalized the use of ICT as a strategy of keeping in tandem with best practices of management, development and sustenance of university education worldwide,” states CPS Research International – which has also conducted similar survey’s in South Africa, Senegal and Nigeria.

The survey involved 250 fully-fledged universities, constituent colleges and college campuses in Kenya, Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.

Other Kenyan institutions that made the top 10 include; Multi-Media University College (5), African Virtual University (6), University of Nairobi (8), Mount Kenya University (9) and Kenyatta University at number ten.

Researchers used face to face interviews to assess the institution’s facilities and also the student/staff ratio accessing ICT facilities.

“The information collected was also compared with the ICT practice of leading universities worldwide,” says Dann Mwangi, regional director, CPS.

“CPS International Education Index 2012 has convincingly identifies access to ICT as the single most influential resource which the top Universities worldwide use to ensure that their graduates are not only highly qualifies but are also globally competitive.”

The report notes Kenyan universities are leading in the use and accessibility of ICT in education in East Africa while Burundi is lagging behind. However, the double intake policy adopted by Public universities is reducing the ratio of students to ICT facilities in the institutions especially in main campuses.

I have no qualms with MUBS being in the lead, but why use the Makerere University’s School of Engineering building in the photo to illustrate MUBD prowess??
