Nondescript Rugby Club snatched the Airtel Impala Floodlights Rugby tournament from the defending champions, University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine. Nondies has to wait for the dying minutes of the finals to sneak a try, beating the University side 17 -12.

The match started on a tentative note, both sides cautiously prodding each other in the initial stages. Nondies opened the scoring when Machine old boy Filden Sinei stroked home a penalty from a Machine infringement, the red lions going 3-0 up.

Elly Mukasi would put Machine ahead with a try, George Mutuku converting to see the students 7-3 up but a Sinei penalty reduced the deficit to 7-6, a lead that Machine held into half time.

Second half action saw Sinei restore the lead for Nondies courtesy of penalty following a Machine infringement, the scoreboard reading 9-7 to Nondies. With the second half finely poised, Sinei stretched the lead for Nondies, stroking home another penalty as the scores read 12-7 for Nondies.

Machine were not giving up, their pressure finally reaping dividends when former Kenya junior international Kelvin Gacheru grounded the ball at the death sending the game into extra time with the scores level at 12 -12.

Calvins Biko won the game for Nondies with his try in sudden death, the final score 17-12 for Nondies.

Machine has been the most successful side at the tournament, winning 19 titles while Nondies last won the floodlights 10 years ago.

Sinei was voted the tournament’s MVP while Machine’s Gacheru claimed the top try scorer’s title. Nakuru’s Marting Muita lifted the top points scorer with 26 points while his club claimed third place with a 36-5 win over Impala RFC.
