Lupita Nyong’o might best be known for her work on the silver screen, but the actress is gearing up for a different kind of release, a book release.
The American based Kenyan Oscar award-winning actress has been hard at work on her first children’s book for quite some time and now, she has finally revealed the cover of the book called ‘Sulwe’ which means ‘Star’ in her native Dholuo language.
Nyong’o took to Instagram to give fans a first look at the cover for ‘Sulwe’, a new children’s book aiming at encouraging kids to love themselves. In the photo, the ‘Us’ star can be seen posing with the book, which according to the caption will be out later this year.

The children’s book tackles a tough subject in the world we live today, colorism. “I wrote #Sulwe to encourage children (and everyone really!) to love the skin that they are in and see the beauty that radiates from within,” she posted.
Sulwe tells the story of a young girl growing up in Kenya who has the darkest skin color of all her family. It’s a fact that makes Sulwe incredibly uncomfortable, and one the Hollywood star can relate to.
Nyong’o announced that she was writing a children’s book early last year. She has gone on to speak about the journey to accepting her dark complexion many times in the past, and it’s lovely that she’s now looking to empower young children to do the same with her book.
The book is currently available for pre-order and you can pick up a copy of ‘Sulwe’ by Lupita Nyong’o in book stores on October 1st, 2019.
