The 3rd Edition of the EXP Kings of Rugby, which came to a close Saturday 22nd October at the Egerton University Njoro campus, saw the University of Jo’burg outdoing Kenyatta University’s BlakBlad 17 -14 to clinch the title. Egerton University, the hosts came in third after beating MKU Thika 14 – 10. Mean Machine clinched the Plate final victory with South Eastern Kenya University, SEKU, bagging the Bowl trophy. Multimedia University walked away with a win in the Shield final.
There was prize money further awarded to the first two teams, with the University of Jo’burg taking home Kshs. 150,000. Kenyatta University’s BlakBlad walked away with Kshs. 75,000.The two-day tournament organised in partnership with the Kenya Universities’ Sports Association, brought together 12 teams which included Makerere University from Uganda and 10 local teams through a selection that went through a four leg circuit across the country.
The tournament organizers hope to bring in more international teams into the tournament in the coming years as the tournament continues to grow as well as attract sponsors to support this exciting game that has a world of opportunities. This year the tournament saw the support of East African Breweries Ltd and Safaricom’s BLAZE. This was the first time the EXP Kings of Rugby was held out of Nairobi as in the last two years, the games have been played at Harlequins, Ngong Road.
