Kenyatta University today unveiled UniCity Mall in a colourful ceremony that was graced by the Education Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, University Chancellor, Dr. Benson Wairegi and Chairman of Council Prof. Ratemo Michieka. The university has also opened a state of the art National Oil Petrol station.

In his speech during the opening ceremony, the Chief Guest, Dr. Fred Matiang’i noted that the unveiling of the two facilities was in line with the University’s approach to have a third revenue stream besides funding from the Government and tuition fees paid by students.

He lauded the creative approach in bridging financing gaps to cater for teaching and research at Kenyatta University. In his remarks, he lauded the outstanding leadership of Kenyatta University led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olive Mugenda that has not only seen stability at the University but also great transformation over the last ten years.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olive Mugenda disclosed that the opening of the UniCity facilities is a realization of a dream that began seven years ago. This was informed by a need to supplement the University’s resources by adopting an entrepreneurial approach in utilization of resources. Coupled with an innovative zeal, the objective was to augment funding to cater for core areas of teaching and research.

For the facilities, the Vice-Chancellor noted that the vantage position along the busy Nairobi-Thika superhighway shall tap into the ever growing population and vehicular traffic while also serving as avenues for opening up job opportunities for Kenyatta University students and surrounding communities. She further noted that the new facilities provide a wider range of services from a convenient location. In addition, she thanked all stakeholders with whose input the first phase of the UniCity complex has come to be.

The newly opened UniCity is located within a serene environment along the Nairobi-Thika superhighway. It boasts of a close proximity to the busy railway line and the Northern and Eastern bypasses making it readily accessible to many commuters using these modes of transport.

The unveiled first phase of the development features a hyper market, retail shops, banks /ATMs, and an ultra-modern National Oil fuel station. The technology detail in the new petrol station including automated car-wash facilities are a distinguishing feature. The upcoming second and third phases of the development shall see construction of a modern convention centre, 5-star hotel, a recreation park, and office blocks. This will provide a wide range of social and commercial amenities.
