Kenyatta University commissions first Uni City development

Kenyatta University has officially commissioned a ‘Uni-City’ at a ground breaking ceremony at the main campus near the Postmodern Library.

According to the university’s project plan, The ‘Uni-City’ will be implemented in three phases. The first phase will see the construction of a Hyper Market, Retail Shops, Banks/ATMs, Petrol Station, and a spacious car park. The second phase will see the construction of a convention centre, hotel and a Recreation Park while the third phase will see the construction of an office block and apartment block.

The Chief Guest at the ground breaking was the Kenyatta University Chancellor, Benson Wairegi. Other notable guests present for the event were Hon. Dr. Evans Kidero – Governor Nairobi County, Hon. William Kabogo – Governor Kiambu County. Also in attendance for the ceremony were prospective investors including Uchumi CEO – Dr. Jonathan Ciano, and National Oil Corporation CEO- Mrs. Sumayya H. Athman.

“The ‘Uni-City’ project will contribute towards meeting K.U’s mission and will also innovatively proffer towards achieving the target of the Kenya Vision 2030,” said Benson Wairegi

KU VC Prof Mugenda said the project will not only benefit the students and the University by generating an alternative income and an avenue for part-time jobs for students, but will also bring in investors and benefit the community by providing easy access to essential goods and service within a strategic location.

“The ‘Uni-City’ modern mini city which is the first of its kind in Kenya will be situated within the University’s main campus in close proximity to a busy railway line, Nairobi-Thika Superhighway and the Northern and Eastern by-passes,” said Prof Mugenda, adding that this will make it readily accessible to many commuters using these networks as well as the increasing population surrounding the University.

“To access the ‘Uni-City’, the Government has approved the creation of an exit from the Nairobi-Thika Superhighway.”
