Kenyan researcher Nanjira Sambuli named among BBC’s 100 Women

This year’s BBC 100 women list has been revealed and a Kenyan is featured on the list.


Nanjira Sambuli is a 31-year-old is a Kenyan researcher, writer, policy analyst, advocacy strategist and musician.

She is currently a digital equality expert and leads the World Wide Web Foundation in its bid to increase digital equality. She looks for solutions to ensure nobody is left behind when it comes to web access, whether disadvantaged by gender or geography.

The BBC 100 Women is an annual list that seeks to recognize inspiring and influential women from around the world for. This year the BBC asked: what would the future look like if it were driven by women.

According to BBC, Nanjira replied, “My hope is that we see it happen more and more, and not only when women are ‘given’ positions to fulfil diversity quotas or clean up messes. We have a ways to go for ‘The Female Future’ to unleash its true potential to heal the world.”

Sambuli was the former Research Manager at iHub in Nairobi from January 2014 to December 2015.

Other influential women featured on the list this year include 16-year-old Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg, Jamaican athlete and the world’s fastest woman in the world Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, American footballer Megan Rapinoe, UK- Somalian referee Jawahir Roble and American actress Bella Thorne.

In 2017 Kenyan media personality and activist Adelle Onyango was recognized.
