No one thought a boy-band formed in the halls of Kenyatta University would one day perform to a global audience. But ‘Just a Band’ has astounded themselves and the Kenyan music scene by pursuing their music passion and their common belief in ‘doing something different’ in the music scene.

The band, which started as a three-man band, is certainly turning African music on its head with a fusion of pop, funk, electronic and their special genre. We simply can’t ‘box in’ their music, and maybe that’s what they wanted.

For the band to perform at TEDGlobal 2013 in Edinburgh, Scotland, is a testament that their unique blend of music is hitting the right cords. Bill Sellanga, Daniel Muli and Jim Chuchu were invited to the event that brings together radical thinkers and extraordinary personalities that challenge conventional thinking.

At TED, the world’s leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes.

“As Africans and the generation we are part of, we have been exposed a lot to the Western world,” Sellenga told TED blog writer Kate Torgovnick.

“But other parts of the world know very little about Africa. We hope to be part of the generation that tells a different story about where we come from.”

The trio performed along other newer members of Just A Band – Mbithi Masya, James Ireri, Joe Were and Richard Wandati.
