6. Nakuru is Likely to See a Job Boom

Start packing your bags, Nairobians. Liquid Telecom has taken over from Orange in attempting to provide free wifi within Nakuru town. Liquid Telecom may just succeed, which means rapid expansion in internet-based jobs in the town. Or, perhaps bet your chances on the growing investor interest in hospitality and real estate in Nakuru. Old buildings are said to be coming down to make room for high-rises. South African shopping malls are said to have an interest in the town.

8. Zoom in on Manufacturing

We have previously highlighted this sector as showing signs of growth. Here are some concrete examples for your benefit. Chloride Exide opened a factory for the production of maintenance-free batteries this week–a Sh 600 million investment that has seen in stop or slow importation from Korea and thus move jobs to Kenya. They are currently producing 10,000 batteries a month and aim to up production to 50,000-60,000 a month. Meanwhile, the geothermal plant at Menegai is considering entering the carbon-dioxide production field to compete with Carbacid. BOC is also still deciding whether or not to enter this field and already has a licence to do so. An increase in CO2 production is likely to lower prices and spur some growth in related industries especially in Food and Beverages i.e. Coca Cola and EABL

9. Try Beverages but perhaps not Food

Nestle, a major food company in Kenya, is currently entangled in a row over plans to restructure. This will entail retrenching 46 of its employees and could indicate a loss of jobs or the creation of room for younger workers. EABL is, however, a very likely win for job seekers. It has declared an 11 percent growth in last quarter profits as well as a decrease in debt by sh4 billion, improving its financial position. But if EABL doesn’t hire you, follow the money going to its suppliers.

10. Stop Waiting for CDF Jobs

If you have been trying for a CDF-based job, you have a bit longer to wait, perhaps, even a very long time. The treasury is holding 2.7bn of CDF- funds from the 2012-14 financial years. This backlog is dispensation of funds is likely to continue; the Treasury is very likely cash-strapped for now if its emergency request for a supplementary budget of Sh57 billion is any indication. Try for other county-related jobs. Consider Busia county projects, for example: by-passes worth ksh 9million to be complete in a year and sh18m in fish processing plants to be installed this month.
