After a grueling social enterprise competition hosted by AIESEC Strathmore, Evelyne Njau beat six other finalists from different campuses to emerge the winner of the inaugural ‘Lions Den’ competition.

Evelyne – a third year water and environmental engineering student at JKUAT – won the business competition for her Fab Farm idea. Her concept aims at providing quality food at an affordable price.

“Looking back, it has been a roller-coaster ride for me, but nothing can compare to the experience I got during the trainings and as I prepared my business idea. It’s immeasurable,” said Evelyn.

The competition drew judges from various  sectors including Nabeel Hassanali (Genesis Consult), Rebecca Mincy (Acumen Fund), Hooman Hamidi (P&G) and Bikundo Onyari (aNDE Kenya).

“There is great capacity to be tapped and universities need to partner with organizations that have an entrepreneurial mind set for students to be able to understand the business model and exploit there ideas. It was a great initiative as it has helped students to expose their ideas and express potential,” said Nabeel Hassanali.

Other competitors said they learned a lot although some of the students wished they had been given more time to prepare after the pre-qualifications had taken place. Seven students made it to the the finals although only four presented. Some students had concerns of losing their intellectual property.

“I cannot present the idea as I have not registered my business idea. I fear if I present my idea someone may take it up during the presentation and implement it and I do not have any legal proof to show that the idea belongs to me,” said one of the competitors.

Kevin Macheru and Stephen Mwangi took the first runners-up position with their idea of a tour firm. Their main goal was to partner with different children initiatives in major tourist destinations and incorporate in one product an opportunity to visit destinations plus volunteer in partner initiatives.

“Among the reasons we got involved was that the incubation programme was enticing as we got an opportunity to work with and interact with the best in the cooperate world,” said Kevin Macheru.

As the main sponsor, Proctor and Gamble (P&G) will give a guided office tour at P&G to Evelyne where she will get an opportunity to interact with senior management at the company.

“The idea of the event was good. As you know most products at Proctor and Gamble (P&G) began as small ideas and have grown to big brands. This event gave us an opportunity to be able to give students the opportunity to showcase their business ideas,” said Ken Kamau of P&G.
