JKUAT Assembly Line Churns Out First Batch of 2,000 Tablets

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology has rolled out 2,000 tablets from their tech-plant located in Juja. Known for technological advancements JKUAT, as well as Moi University won a tender to produce school devices. JKUAT  began with 2,000 tablets to be used by primary school students as part of a Digital Literacy Program. In an event attended by various stakeholders including Principal Secretary for ICT and innovation, Eng. Victor Kyalo, the first batch are said to be the beginning of JKUAT tablet production line. The program is set to have JKUAT plant producing at least 1,200 tablets per day according to Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mabel Imbuga. The assembly plant is a joint venture with South American firm Positivo BGH.

The JKUAT plant has received interest from near and far with Nigeria’s communications minister Adebayo Shittu attending the event. According to Business Daily, “Mr. Shittu said he was impressed with the project and mulled purchasing units from the Kenyan facility to pilot a digital learning program in Nigeria.”

In implementing the use of the laptops in primary schools across the country, JKUAT and Positivo BGH  began training countrywide. According to the university website, JKUAT-POSITIVO BGH Consortium has successfully installed the devices in 518 schools spread across 21 counties and trained over 4, 000 primary school teachers on the Digital Literacy Program.
